SCIENTIFIC CAREER
Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral Research Fellow Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, 2009-2012
N2-fixation by bryophyte-cyanobacteria associations in recently deglaciated areas. María was responsible for this sub-project aimed to describe how bryophytes contribute to the nitrogen budget in Sub-Antarctic areas where glaciers are currently undergoing retreat. She carried out two field campaigns in Tierra del Fuego (Chile) making measurements of N2 fixation in the field and lab, nutrient contents in plant and soil samples, bryophyte δ15N and δ13C signatures, bryophyte identification, survey epiphytic cyanobacteria by molecular analysis and abundance by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
Comparative bryophyte ecophysiology under extreme environments. María participated in a field campaign in the highest volcanoes in Mexico and was responsible for the development of this sub-project.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico, 2008-2009
Biological indication and critical loads of atmospheric nitrogen deposition on tropical mountain forest in Mexico. She designed and developed studies to identify species and biological variables suitable for the establishment of biomonitoring networks and determination of critical loads of nitrogen deposition in México. Maria set up a new project to establishment networks of atmospheric deposition using Mixed Bed Ion Exchange Resin Columns. She is currently working together with the Government of Mexico (National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change) and the Government of the Federal District.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow University of Sheffield, UK, 2006-2008
Physiological responses of bryophytes to long-term nitrogen deposition and rates of recovery in grassland ecosystems. This research highlights the significant importance of physiological mechanisms involved in changes of bryophyte composition in N polluted environments. María developed new techniques within this topic such as HPLC analysis, chlorophyll fluorescence and phosphomonoesterase enzyme activity.
Visiting Research Fellow Abisko Scientific Research Station, Sweden, Jun – Aug 2006 & 2007
Physiological responses to long-term enhanced and ambient solar ultraviolet radiation in sub-arctic bryophytes. She carried out an extensive assessment of bryophyte responses to UV radiation which included measurements of secondary metabolites and photosynthetic pigments by HPLC and energy dissipation mechanisms by chlorophyll fluorescence, growth and changes in bryophyte cover.
Visiting Research Fellow University of Saarlandes, Germany, Oct – Dec 2004
Purification and identification of secondary metabolites in bryophytes.
Visiting Research Fellow University of Friedrich-Alexander, Germany, Oct – Dec 2003
Effects of UV radiation on the physiology of algae
